Leavers Celebration 2019

 

Sadly, it is that time of the year again when we have to say goodbye to our Year 11 students as they depart for the world of employment or further education.

We invited family and friends and held a Leavers Ceremony and combined this with a Celebration of Achievement for all students from Years 11, 10, 9, 8 and 7.

It was our best ever turn out and there were more than sixty people in attendance. These included parents, grandparents, carers, representatives from schools, various councils, social services, Addaction and Catch 22.

Our headteacher Angela welcomed everyone, introduced all of our teachers and staff members and gave an introduction to Peregrinate School, our culture and ethos and the meaning of the word Peregrinate.

Angela explained that Peregrinate is a 16th Century Latin word derived from the word Peregranazia. Peregrinate is the verb- the doing word- and that is us- DOING.

Peregrinate means to set out on a journey, unclear, unsure and undecided about the destination – and if you never get there – THEN THE JOURNEY IS THE PURPOSE.

Angela related to Kenny Dalglish, who, at a ceremony for the Hillsborough Disaster read out the poem Footsteps in the Sand. After completing the poem Kenny then explained to the congregation “In other words, You’ll Never Walk Alone”.

Continuing with the journey Angela explained how the poem Footsteps in the Sand was very much at the heart of our culture as a school and how part of our logo is in fact a set of footsteps.

 

Footsteps in the Sand

 

One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the LORD.

Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the LORD.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints.

He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the LORD about it: “LORD, you said that once I decided to follow you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why when I needed you most you would leave me.” The LORD replied: “My son, my precious child, I love you and I would never leave you.
During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

The Celebrations

 

Our Headteacher informed the guests of the fantastic efforts all students had put into the academic year and that the school had broken all records with qualifications and that some students had even gone on and achieved higher level results which had never been achieved before.

The 2019, year eleven students are leaving us with:

 

• 15 BTEC Entry Level 3 English
• 15 BTEC Entry Level 3 maths
•  8 BTEC Level 1 English
•  10 BTEC Level 1 maths
• 5 BTEC Level 2 English
•  5 BTEC Level 2 maths
•  9 BTEC Level 1 Construction
•  9 BTEC Level 1 Retail Knowledge
•  8 Working Safely

 

A total of 79 qualifications in all. Well done and thank you for your hard work!

 

Angela confirmed that we are also celebrating our year nines and tens who’s hard work has earned them so far:

• 10 BTEC Entry Level 3 English
• 10 BTEC Entry Level 3 maths
•  1 BTEC Level 1 English
•  1 BTEC Level 1 maths

 

Obviously, the year nines and tens will go on working towards the high achievements of the older students and there are a few who are already ahead of expectations. A very exciting future in store for them and Peregrinate.

For this year that is a total of 101 Qualifications Achieved SO FAR!

 

We must also not forget our year sevens and eights who have also worked hard and are well on the way to matching the achievements of our older students. Several of our years sevens and eights are already capable of passing qualifications in English and maths.

 

Staff Celebrations

 

This was also a celebration for our teachers they have also been studying hard to gain additional specialist teaching qualifications:

It was then time for the Individual Achievers Awards. These came in Four categories.

The first of which was the Excellent Attendance Awards that went to:

Paul Thompson

Leon Daniels

Having presented all of the above students with Excellent Attendance Certificates Angela explained that there was a definite correlation between high attendance and high achievement as all of the students with excellent attendance were also high achievers.

Next was the Overall Achievement Award. This was presented to:

 

Michael Sweeney

• Michael has achieved the most academically in the shortest time
• Michael is in year 11 so has a positive progression to make beyond school
• Michael has independently developed strategies to cope calmly through troubled times
• Michael has trusted our staff from day one, he works well for them and is popular in equal measure with staff, learners and visitors!
• Well done Mikey!

 

Next came the City of Liverpool Student of the Year and this was presented to:

 

Joshua Matthews

• Josh has made the most exceptional progress
• Personally
• Emotionally
• Socially, and
• Academically
• Josh is in year 11 so has a positive progression to make beyond school and has already secured a place at Hugh Baird College.

Well done Josh you deserve it!

 

Finally, the Peregrinate Student of the Year was awarded to:

 

Adam Newton

• Adam has achieved way beyond anybody’s expectations! Including his own.
• Adam is in year 11 so has a positive progression to make beyond school, he is exploring apprenticeship opportunities and college places as a back up
• Adam has made significant positive lifestyle changes and makes more positive choices at home, in school and in life

 Congratulations Adam, we always believed in you and knew you could make it!

 

2018/2019 Targets Smashed

 

Angela explained that this had been a hugely successful year for Peregrinate School as we had set ourselves challenging targets and that we had smashed every one of them.

1. Year 11 students gained 79 qualifications
2. Year 9 & 10 students gained 22 qualifications
3. Peregrinate staff gained 4 Teacher Training qualifications
4. Peregrinate successfully expanded to recruit Year 7 Learners
5. Peregrinate successfully expanded to recruit Year 8 Learners
6. Peregrinate successfully implemented home schooling facilities
7. Peregrinate successfully recruited enough students to run at FULL capacity
8. Established a waiting list post Year 11 leaving on 28th June 2019

 

Started as Apprentice and Worked his way up……

 

We could not hold a celebration of our students, teachers and Peregrinate Schools success without celebrating our longest serving staff member, Kieran Moran. Kieran joined us as a fresh-faced apprentice and has continuously worked hard to improve his academic status and has achieved massively. Kieran is an excellent example to all of our students to see just what rewards can come with dedicated hard work.

To end the celebration:

 

The afternoon closed with a finger buffet and of course our famous Peregrinate cupcakes from Pat at Naked Cake. Parents and families took the opportunity to chat to our staff about their child’s success and future and judging from the feedback all guests had an enjoyable although sometimes tearful time celebrating their loved ones hard work and achievements.

This afternoon once again reflected our School motto which is at the heart of everything we do at School:

Inspire ~ Enjoy ~ Achieve ~ Succeed
