Students Visit IWM North

As we come towards our Christmas Break we took our learners to the Imperial War Museum (IWM) North in Manchester. For many of our students this was a first time visit. The day proved to be educational for all and eye opening and thought provoking for most.

Purpose-built to convey the impact of war on our world, IWM North delivers a unique experience, exploring war from diverse perspectives.

Walk through a timeline of conflict from the First World War to the present day and discover the fascinating history of over 2,000 objects, photographs and interactive displays.

Exhibits include Tolkien’s First World War revolver, the field gun that fired the first British shots in 1914, a seven-metre piece of twisted steel from the World Trade Centre and specially commissioned artworks.

Your experience at IWM North will change your perspective on world shaping events.

Students Immersed themselves in the award-winning 360-degree cinematic Big Picture Show that brings a broad range of perspectives into poignant focus, reflecting not only on the immediate effects of war, but also on what happens when the guns stop firing. Using surround sound, projected digital moving images and photographs, the Big Picture Show brings to life people’s experiences of war.

Recently upgraded to the latest HD technology, the Big Picture Show immerses you in the heart of the action and creates a moving sensory experience.

Shows are projected daily on the 27-foot-high walls of our Main Exhibition Space, each focusing on a different aspect of war.

Mancunian poet Tony Walsh, explores the dignity of human spirit during conflict:

“IMAGINE ALL THOSE FACES FROM THE HISTORY BOOKS, THE NEWS;

IMAGINE FOR ONE MOMENT THAT YOU’RE STANDING IN THEIR SHOES.

IMAGINE HAVING HOPES AND DREAMS, THEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG;

AND EVERYTHING YOU WANT TO BE – REDUCED TO JUST – BE STRONG.”
