Learners Take Part in Time to Change Day

On 10th October staff and learners at Peregrinate took part in Time to Change as part of the World Mental Health Day. This is a multi-agent initiative including The Department of Health, Comic Relief, Mind, Lottery Funding and Rethink Mental Illness.

The purpose of the day was to highlight mental health issues and the numbers of people in society who suffer with mental health. All of us have mental health and, like our bodies, our minds can become unwell.  One in ten young people will experience a mental health problem. These include depression, anxiety disorder, eating disorders, psychosis or bipolar disorder. The day was to show the importance of talking about mental health and how to get help early if things don’t feel right, just like we would for our physical health.

Time to Change is a nationwide movement to get people talking about mental health. No one should feel ashamed about having a mental health problem, they wouldn’t if they had a broken leg.

Supporting someone with a mental health problem, just like supporting someone with a broken leg, can make a big difference to how they feel.

And it’s really easy!

Time to Change campaigners have produced an animation to give us some examples of the small things which can make a big difference.

Peregrinate learners took part in a Time to Change Small Things Assembly which showed them how easy it is to help someone suffering the many different mental health problems just by taking time to offer a small kindness as well as to chat and listen. The key message was Small Things can make a Big Difference to someone.

Many were surprised to find out that one on ten young people suffer from some kind of mental health issue and all are now more aware of the signs to look out for in themselves, their friends and family.
